Since May 22, 2025, over 4,000 WSIB employees represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) have been on strike. The WSIB has suspended all appeals processes and decision-making for the duration of the labour disruption.

In September 2026, the situation is compounded by confirmed layoff reports: WSIB offices in Thunder Bay, St. Catharines, and Sudbury are closing, with 400+ jobs cut and some IT/claims functions relocated to Texas and Boston.

⚠️ Key Impacts for Injured Workers

Appeals & Hearings — On Hold

WSIAT ( Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal) hearings are paused pending claim file updates from WSIB.
WSIB internal appeals (Reconsiderations) are suspended.
No new hearing dates have been set — the WSIB will contact you to reschedule when the labour disruption ends.

Deadline Extensions — Unclear

Objection time limits are temporarily extended, but details are unclear and vary by case type.
Do not assume automatic extensions — document all deadlines in your Evidence Locker.
If you have a filing deadline during this period, mark it immediately and contact your representative.

Claim Processing — Minimal

The WSIB is maintaining critical services only (urgent medical reports, immediate benefit payments).
Routine claim adjudication (new claims, rate calculations, form updates) is delayed.
Annual reviews and redeterminations are paused.

Service Access — Reduced

WSIB offices in affected regions are closed or operating with skeleton staff.
Phone lines may experience longer wait times.
Online services (My Benefits, eForms) remain available but with slower processing.

1. Document Everything

2. Track Your Deadlines

The WSIB strike extends objection periods, but you must still file within the extended windows.

3. Contact Your Union (If Applicable)

If you are a public sector worker covered by OPSEU, check with your local for strike support updates.

4. Keep Your Lawyer/Representative Informed
